After reading about a string of human deaths caused by bears in Yellowstone National Park, I pitched a story to NPR looking into the needs and habits of bears… and the habits and misconceptions of park visitors. I spent a day in Yellowstone talking to experts and tourists, and even saw a bunch of people get our of their cars — just yards away from black bears — to snap a photo. I did not see anyone mauled.
“With summer vacations underway, millions of visitors are heading to Yellowstone National Park to marvel at the scenery and wildlife. Bears in and around the park have killed four people over the last two summers, and park officials are warning visitors that Yellowstone is a wild place.”
